Watercolour pencil on cradled birch wood panel

30cm wide x 25cm high

Australia has many well known iconic creatures, the koala, the kangaroo and the emu all come to mind. But have you heard of the rakali?

In the early 1990’s there was a push to rename the water rat, “rakali” to give this cutie a makeover of sorts. Rakali’s are much misunderstood creatures, they really are our version of the otter. They are bigger than European rats and have a thick waterproof coat.

My rakali acts as the ferryman to a superb fairy wren and a red browed finch.

This work is watercolour pencil drawn directly onto a birch wooden panel leaving the beautiful wood grain as the background.
